After a degree and PhD in Biochemistry & Physiology from the University of Reading, Fred continued as a research fellow, focussing on the use of Surface Plasmon Resonance technology in molecular kinetics, and developing it into a successful commercial service, which later became an integral part of the University’s Biocentre facility. During this time, he was also responsible for developing and supporting several bioinformatics tools, workflows and content management systems for the University. He became involved with a start-up company focussing on the development of real-time silicon nanowire-based biosensors for the Healthcare, Oil & Gas and Defence sectors. In 2008 he won an EPSRC KTA award and became CSO in 2009, covering all aspects of the technology development, including assay development and surface chemistries, along with chip, electronics and software design, as well as becoming heavily involved in the business development aspects of growing a start-up.
Following this, he joined GE Healthcare as an Application Specialist, supporting Biacore and Microcal LFIA Technologies, providing specialist support and training to new and existing users in the South West and Ireland, consolidating his standing as an expert in the field. More recently he acted as a consultant to Genzyme UK, managing the integration and validation of Biacore technology into their suite of GMP pharmaceutical release assays. Fred joined Oxford University Innovation as a Senior Technology Transfer Manager in June 2013, with a particular focus on software commercialisation.
