Oxford Space Systems

Oxford Space Systems (OSS) is a venture capital backed, award-winning, early stage space technology business. OSS uses its proprietary materials to offer a new generation of deployable satellite antennas and other structures that are lighter, less complex and lower cost than currently available commercially. OSS set a record for the space sector by going from material concept to successful on-orbit product demonstration of its AstroTube™ boom in under 30 months.

The OSS team covers a wide range of disciplines from material science to RF and thermo-mechanical design for the space environment. The company has won a number of awards since its inception in late 2013 including:

  • Best UK Technology Start-Up – British Engineering Excellence Awards 2015
  • Only UK company in the Top 5 Most Promising Global Space Start-Ups to Watch, FinSpace Awards, Paris 2017
  • Best Application of New Physics in Business Award, U.K. Institute of Physics 2017
  • Business of the Year, Oxfordshire Business Awards 2018

As part of its continued growth, OSS moves into its own custom facility at the Harwell Space Cluster in October this year. This gives the company the largest clean room on campus in which to assemble and test its products for the space industry.

The company is a keen supporter of STEM activities and regularly presents at schools and universities. OSS took on its first two ‘space apprentices’ under the Oxford Advanced Skills programme in 2017 as well as accommodating a number of placement students each year.
